EPISODE 8

Why Friendships Change After 40

There’s someone who used to know everything about your life. And now they know what you post.

You didn’t have a fight. Nobody betrayed anybody. Nothing dramatic happened.

You just… drifted.

And somehow, the person who once knew what was happening in your life every day became someone you occasionally hear from.

In Episode 8 of What’s Your Ex?, we’re talking about friendships after 40—why they change, why some quietly fade, why connection can feel harder in midlife, and how to decide whether a friendship should be accepted, revived, or remembered with love.

IN THIS EPISODE

When we were younger, friendship had a lot of help.

School, college, work, kids’ activities, and everyday routines naturally kept us around the same people. We didn’t always have to make an effort to stay connected because our lives kept bringing us together.

But adulthood changes that.

People move. Jobs change. Kids grow up. Someone becomes a caregiver. Someone starts over. Schedules shift. And sometimes the friendship doesn’t fall apart—the structure that kept bringing you together disappears.

Sometimes your lives stop matching.

Sometimes one person changes more than the other.

And sometimes you realize you were the one doing most of the reaching out, organizing, listening, or keeping the relationship going.

We talk about:

  • Why friendships can change so much after 40

  • Why some friendships fade without a fight or clear ending

  • What happens when your lives start moving in different directions

  • The difference between missing a person and missing the chapter of life they represent

  • Why friendship grief can be difficult to name

  • How to know whether an old friendship deserves another try

  • The difference between a peaceful smaller circle and loneliness

  • Why making new friends after 40 often requires creating connection more intentionally

  • Why friendship shouldn’t feel like a permanent audition

  • How to let go of a friendship without pretending it never mattered
